The local fire marshal declared the 17 unit complex “unsafe” after residents of the complex told officials that they heard “loud creaking noises.” Firefighters arrived at the scene of the partial collapse on the Norwich-New London Turnpike around Monday at midnight.
Although there were no injuries, the Red Cross is assisting residents with finding alternative housing. The two-story, 17 apartment complex is cordoned off by yellow caution tape.
It was observed that snow was covering the roof and portions of a wooden beam that is next to the gutters appear to be split and have fallen onto the snow below.
Police said the roof collapse was reported at 11:45 p.m. They Montville Fire Marshall will be investigating whether the weight of the snow compromised the roof.
An inspection of the roof will be done today police added.
